General Questions
Reaper Actual is an Open-World Persistent Shooter (OPS). Players play as Reapers, former Tier 1 operators from the world's armed forces and intelligence services. Reapers have Bases which are physical places on the beautiful but deadly island of Marova. They venture out from these bases into a massive world that is controlled by 5 different AI controlled factions that are constantly at war with one another. The world of Marova is completely PVPVE at all times, so every player and NPC you meet is deadly. Players do missions, kill other players, collect loot and bring it back to their base. If they aren't careful doing their missions they generate heat which can lead to their base being raidable.
Reapers are former Tier 1 operators from the world's armed forces or intelligence services. Reapers have a unique look and a set of weapons and gear they can always bring into the world should one be killed. They also have a set of abilities and bonuses. We'll go into much deeper detail in the near future.
Reapers do missions for the different factions on Marova. We built an AI called Cerberus that creates missions for players that are designed to put them directly into contact with each other. For example a mission from the Rogue Command faction may require the assassination of a High Value Target. It may give that mission to one person or group of players and a counter-mission to defend that very same HVT to another person or group. Our goal is to get people into PVP situations. We take that to extremes at times when Cerberus offers a number of missions to different players in one area with the explicit goal of getting big fights We're very fond of. We also let solo players take missions away from a lot of players if they prefer to have a chill.
Reaper Actual is a cross between an MMORPG and a First Person Shooter. Unlike other shooters, there isn't a match with a start in an end.. It works like an MMO where you can drop in when you want and play for as long as you want. Your character levels up. You have MMO style progression. You build your base up. You collect different Reapers (Operators in other shooters). If you get killed by someone, you can go right back out, find them and get your revenge because if they haven't logged off they're all yours to hunt down.
Bases are the player's home in Marova. They come in many shapes, sizes, types and locations. Each base type has different pros and cons including location. Some players want to have a hideout deep in the forest that's hard to get to but also hidden away from other players. Others want to have a huge warehouse base with many different crafting/manufacturing stations. We plan to offer a large variety of bases over time. We're also going to let players own multiple bases. Fundamentally a base is a location and a type of building in the world. Players have access to their base when they open the door with a keycard. Once they go inside they are in an instanced interior that contains a vault (different bases have different vault sizes), hard points to attach defenses to, crafting stations and other things we'll be sharing over time. Players will also need to defend their bases if they are not careful when they're doing missions out in the world. If they attract too much heat, it makes it possible for the base to be raided. The defenders have an advantage if they've set up defenses. Players can also allow the Reapers they own but are not currently playing to help defend the base. If the raiding players are successful they will have access to a subset of the items in the vault. Players cannot ever lose their base.
Yes. We feature a full day/night cycle and weather. Fans of our previous work know we are really into those kinds of things and the gameplay differences will be big. We'll offer night vision gear, missions that only happen at certain times of day and many other things directly impacted by day/night and weather.
Absolutely. Land, Sea and air vehicles. We want combined arms to be a big deal in Reaper Actual. More details to follow.
Yes. The world of Reaper Actual is steeped in lore, with an evolving narrative revealed through world events, missions, and environmental storytelling. We have a long term plan for our narrative and our goal is to tell a story over an extended period of time. Players will see that take shape through the different missions they take and by events that happen in the world.
Crafting is one of the deepest systems we are building in Reaper Actual. The world is filled with different resources that can be used to forge weapons, gear and other gameplay impacting things. We can't wait to share more details here.
🛠️ TECH & PLATFORM
PC at launch (via Steam, the Epic Games Store and reaperactual.com).
Reaper Actual is built in Unreal Engine 5.X (we update it regularly so we're not sure which version we will launch on yet), using the latest Nanite and Lumen technologies.
We'll publish full specs closer to launch.
Yes, we will fully support controllers on the PC at launch.
🌐 PERSISTENCE & SERVERS
Yes — but with a focus on community agency. The world persists, and players shape it through actions, factions, and the economy.
Yes. Players will be able to rent servers from us, and build their own communities, including the ability to mod the game.
Yes, once we have finished building out the core game experience our plans are to give the players the ability to mod the game rules and most aspects of the core gameplay experience provided that the base server infrastructure remains similar. What that means for example is players could build a Battle Royale game on top of Marova or really any kind of game mode provided it uses the same base server system. They could also for example swap a building in downtown Alaria with 'Alaria Plaza' say.. Around Christmas time and have players go into an instanced game mode that pits players against terrorists. We want to support a lot of cool mods. This won't be instantaneous and will come over time but our goals here are big just like our game.
We have a very simple approach to monetization. We're going to offer different levels of starter packs that include a Base and a set number of reapers. We intend to offer very low end versions of the game and ones that cost more. We're also going to be selling additional Reapers and Bases. In addition we will of course sell a variety of weapon skins and other non-game impacting items as well as doing a Battle Pass that comes with a variety of different things similar to other similar games. Very importantly players will be able to earn all of these things just by playing the game. To put this as simply as possible - we're in business to make an awesome game for players and to do that we need to be making money. We're excited to build a better and better game over time, but we need the continued support of our players.
💥 WEB3 & MARKETPLACE
On Steam and Epic Game Store NO crypto elements are present whatsoever. It's not even an option. On Reaperactual.com we will ship a version of the game that does support the ability for players to buy and sell things they obtain in game. Most importantly we're also letting players make the same kinds of things we make and (after review) sell them to each other. We liken the way we're doing it to what Steam Community Marketplace offers and in fact on Steam our plan is to support Steam Community Marketplace. All players will be able to interact with each other and play with each other. We aren't going to allow anything sold to give one player an advantage over another player. It's still a skill based FPS. Also, there aren't going to be any ways to move items between players who play on Steam or Epic and the players on ReaperActual.com.
We really believe in the idea of an ecosystem that exists outside the game. Web3 is an awesome way for people to participate in the economy of the game in cool ways. There won't be any scammy elements to our web3. That's not what we're about. We also plan to offer these same elements via the Steam Community Market. We're giving players a simple way to decide which version to play. Don't want to see any crypto elements at all? Cool. You don't have to.. Play on Epic or Steam where they don't exist. We think long term when players see the approach we're taking, the current issues people have with playing games with crypto elements will largely go away if we do it right.
Yes. We plan to have it at the time of launch, but again it's only for players that want to play on Reaperactual.com.
